Scam messages are a persistent problem in the UK, with millions of fraudulent texts and messages sent every day. The UK has a dedicated system for reporting these messages — the 7726 service — plus several other channels. This guide covers how to report scam messages across all platforms.
What is 7726 (SPAM)?
7726 is a free text message reporting service used by all UK mobile networks. The number spells “SPAM” on a phone keypad. When you forward a suspicious message to 7726, your mobile network investigates and can block the sender’s number, trace the source, share intelligence with law enforcement, and take action against the originating network.
How to Report Scam Texts via 7726
For text messages (SMS): Forward the scam message to 7726. You’ll receive an automated reply asking for the sender’s number — reply with it. The service is free on all UK networks. For scam calls: Text “CALL” to 7726, followed by the phone number that called you. On iPhone: Long-press the scam message → tap “More” → tap the forward arrow → enter 7726 → send. On Android: Long-press the message → tap the three dots → Forward → enter 7726 → send.
Email and Online Reporting
Phishing emails: Forward to report@phishing.gov.uk (National Cyber Security Centre). Suspicious websites: Report via the NCSC’s online form. Action Fraud: For scam messages that resulted in financial loss, report at actionfraud.police.uk. Ofcom: If you’re receiving persistent nuisance calls or texts, report to Ofcom at ofcom.org.uk.
Reporting Scam Messages on Social Media
WhatsApp: Open the chat → tap the contact name → Report contact. Also forward to 7726 if the scam originated as an SMS. Facebook Messenger: Open the conversation → tap the person’s name → Report → select the reason. Instagram DMs: Long-press the message → Report → select the reason.
Protecting Yourself from Scam Messages
Don’t click links in messages from unknown senders. Don’t reply to suspicious messages — even replying “STOP” confirms your number is active. Register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) at tpsonline.org.uk to reduce unwanted calls. Enable spam filters on your phone (both iOS and Android have built-in options). Be suspicious of messages claiming to be from banks, delivery companies, or government agencies — these organisations rarely contact you by text with urgent requests. Never provide personal information, passwords, or one-time codes in response to unsolicited messages.
